October is the black sheep of the annual calender with it’s history of crashes that occurred in that month. While not typically a dangerous month to be invested in the stock market, it still bolsters a resume of some of the biggest stock market crashes in our history.
From the 23% drop that led started the Great Depression to the 7.2% drop in 1997, most major stock market crashes occurred in october. In fact, this October 19th marks the 20th year anniversary (time to celebrate?) of the 1987 crash. On October 19th, 1987 the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 508 points/22.6%, becoming one of the most significant crashes in the market’s history.
